(in)continence and mental health...the chicken or the egg?
I love my job with the Alfred Health Continence Clinic and the committed multi-disciplinary team I work with achieve amazing changes in patient’s lives - improving continence issues improves social and occupational functioning and with that, mental health. Improving mental health can, conversely, improve continence issues and hence functioning.
So it is both the chicken and the egg….
I was recently asked to contribute to the Continence Foundation’s publications for consumers and health providers. Although this is the lengthy version (link below), it may provide you with some context to the work of a psychologist in the world of (in)continence. Sincere thanks goes to my mentor Dr Simon Knowles of Swinburne University for his input.
